Williamson teacher charged with sexual assault upon student

A 41-year-old Williamson teacher has been arrested on multiple charges in connection with an alleged inappropriate sexual relationship with a ninth grade student at Griffin High School. Brandy Lynn Nickels of 1291 Wood Creek Rd. is charged with child molestation, sodomy, enticing a child for indecent purposes, statutory rape, sexual assault and sexual battery. According to lead investigator Dexter McCune, the investigation is ongoing and there could be additional victims. Those with information regarding potential additional victims are asked to call Griffin police at 770.229.6452. Additional charges may also be forthcoming. Nickels wa sin her first year teaching in the Spalding system but has taught elsewhere in the past. ’This is a sad event for our school district and the students and families involved. Our highest priority is the safety and welfare of our students. We are thankful that information was given to us that allowed a swift resolution to a bad situation. In truth, it takes a person who notices something that doesn’t seem right to bring that information and suspicion to someone who can act on it. We have to be a community that doesn’t turn a blind eye to situations that appear suspicious. That’s how we protect our children. Also, I want to thank the City of Griffin Police Department and Chief Mike Yates for their complete cooperation in the investigation,’ Spalding school superintendent Jim Smith said. Nickels has resigned her position and is no longer employed by the Spalding school system.
