Women’s prison evacuated after gas leak

Around 2:30 Tuesday, the West Georgia Pre-Release Center was evacuated after a natural gas smell was reported in the hallways. Inmates and staff were moved from the building as firefighters investigated and turned off the gas to the facility. According to business manager Judy Clay, around 184 inmates were evacuated to the exercise yard and around 21 employees were evacuated outside the front of the building. Atlanta Gas Light was called in to find and fix the gas leak. Warden Edd Sanders said emergency personnel responded quickly to the call and inmates and workers were back inside in about two hours. ”We were back to normal operations at about 4:50,” said Sanders. “It was just a small leak and we’ve gotten that taken care of. There were no injuries, no damage and no threats to anybody.”
