Zebulon council honors leaders in city, community

Zebulon City Council members honored leaders in the community and said an official goodbye to several local leaders. Stacy Berry was named the Citizen of the Year at the Dec. 1 council meeting.

“I am always amazed by what Stacy and her group, Just Because United, are able to do for the community. Their backpack and hygiene kit ministries are very important and needed in the area. Many of our children and youth are not getting the basic items they need to succeed, and Stacy’s group is meeting many of those needs through their programs,” said Zebulon mayor Joe Walter. “The fact that Stacy and her family live in Zebulon is a big plus for us. What is even more amazing is that Stacy gets all of this done while also managing her family and her husband’s health needs. I wish I had her energy.”

Council members also gave a final farewell to city administrator Larry Mitcham.

“I had the good fortune to work with Larry Mitcham for his 10 years career serving as the city administrator while serving on the council and as mayor. Larry brought a wealth of experience from his time at Thomaston Mills and at Gordon State College. Larry’s expertise was just what we needed back in 2015,” said mayor Walter.

“We had many early morning and late night phone calls to let me know about city concerns or to give me a ‘head’s up’ about an event. He especially enjoyed calling me while I was at lunch, which would prompt my coworkers to yell out, ‘Tell Larry hello from us.’ I always appreciated his humor and willingness to serve. The role of a local government administrator is never straightforward and I thought we worked well together to get projects developed and completed. We shared a lot of good times and some unhappy times as well. We served as each other’s sounding board on city matters and I got to know his family as well. I wish him all the best in his retirement.”

Several others were honored during the meeting, including Rob Morton who served for 20+ years as city attorney, solicitor and municipal judge and William Thomas who served for 27 years on the council. A plaque in his honor will also be placed at the Zebulon City Park. Mark Nalls was honored for his six years of service as a council member and Amanda Cato was honored for her 12 years of service as municipal/court clerk.

Council also:

  • Introduced April Meeks as the new Administrative Clerk.
    • Approved the city’s new personnel policy.
  • Authorized the city attorney to draft an amendment to the Zoning Ordinance to update the qualifications and composition of the Planning and Zoning commission.
