The power of a good story

By Ann Mann

Every great story begins with something surprisingly small. A single sentence becomes a novel. One act of kindness begins a lifelong friendship. A tiny acorn becomes a mighty oak. A whispered prayer changes a heart forever.

God has always delighted in beginning with what seems small, ordinary, and even insignificant.
In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus invites us to look beyond appearances and discover that the Kingdom of God often arrives quietly, grows patiently, and ultimately changes everything.

It is a Kingdom that does not demand attention with noise or spectacle. Instead, it transforms lives from the inside out, filling ordinary moments with extraordinary grace.

These parables are a reminder that every good story has the power to change us.

Long after we have forgotten statistics and speeches, we remember stories. We remember the tales our grandparents told us around the dinner table. We remember the books that stirred our imagination and the movies that brought us to tears.

Stories have a way of slipping past our defenses and settling deep within our hearts.

Jesus knew that.

When people asked about the Kingdom of God, He rarely responded with a theological lecture. Instead, He told stories.

“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed,” He said. “It is like yeast hidden in flour. It is like treasure buried in a field. It is like a pearl of great value.”

Those images were familiar to the people listening. They knew about farming, baking, searching for treasure, and casting fishing nets. Jesus took the ordinary experiences of everyday life and used them to reveal extraordinary truths about God.

God’s work often begins quietly. A tiny seed becomes a tree. A pinch of yeast transforms an entire loaf of bread. A hidden treasure changes the direction of someone’s life.

We live in a culture that celebrates the spectacular. We often assume that only the biggest accomplishments matter. Yet Jesus tells a different story. Small acts of kindness, words of encouragement, faithful prayers, generous hearts, and quiet obedience are often the very places where God’s Kingdom takes root.

Perhaps that is why the parables have endured for more than two thousand years. They continue to invite us to look at ordinary life with new eyes. They remind us that God is often at work where we least expect it.

Maybe this week, the greatest story unfolding won’t be found in the headlines. Maybe it will be the story of a neighbor helping a neighbor, a family extending forgiveness, or one simple act of love that grows into something far greater than anyone imagined.

After all, every mighty oak begins with a tiny seed.

And every life changed by God begins with one faithful “yes.”
