On Friday, Sept.18, American Legion Post 197 honor guard will conduct a POW/MIA Recognition observance at the senior center commencing at 10 a.m.
The team will conduct several activities including a flag folding ceremony, which will include the meaning of each of the 13 folds. That will be followed by the playing of ‘Taps’, POW/MIA table and chair place settings and a reading of the history of the Purple Heart.
The event honors our current MIAs and past and current POWs across the nation.
Currently, Pike has four known MIAs: Seaman 2nd Class David E. Ledford, Staff Sergeant Joel M. Matthews and Private Marion B. Smoot from WWII and Chief Petty Officer Willie L. King from the Vietnam War.
Pike has six known former POWs. Now deceased from WWII are Major Marvin H. Campbell, Private James J. Dickerson and Private First Class James B. Dukes from the Meansville area; Private Herman Nelson from Zebulon; and Corporal John N. Scott and Private Marion B. Smoot from the Molena area; and former POW Specialist Sixth Class Lenard E. Daugherty from the Vietnam War who currently resides in Williamson.
